Iqo was found by a villager sitting alone by a riverbank. She had lost her mother and was completely on her own. The man who discovered her took Iqo in and kept her for five months before realizing she deserved a better life with professional care. He then set off on a four-hour motorcycle ride to bring the exhausted and dehydrated Iqo to the Nyaru Menteng rehabilitation center.

At the time, in 2022, Iqo was estimated to be around 12 months old. Life as a pet had taken its toll on her — she had been fed almost nothing but rice and was starving for affection.

Today, Iqo is thriving at Nyaru Menteng’s Forest School. She’s making wonderful progress, full of curiosity and enthusiasm for life. Still, she needs plenty of care, nourishment, learning, and love to continue her journey toward a life as a free orangutan again.
